Before you book the work
Walk through the garage and make two lists: what can be moved easily, and what needs an agreement with the installer. Preparation is easier when you know the scope before borrowing storage space or rearranging your week.
- Measure the floor’s length and width. Note steps, alcoves and raised edges separately.
- Describe the current finish, stains, cracks and any water you have noticed.
- Point out cabinets, a refrigerator, a freezer, a water heater and other fixed items.
- Agree on where equipment can enter and where vehicles will be parked.
Confirm whether moving, disconnecting, disposal or storage is included. Do not assume that a floor-coating estimate covers those jobs.
Clear the floor and keep access open
Vehicles and loose storage
Move vehicles, bikes, boxes and loose tools out of the work area at the agreed time. Choose storage that will remain available until the floor is ready for use, not just until the coating is applied.
Heavy and fixed items
Ask how workbenches, shelving, cabinets and appliances will be handled. Confirm whether the coating stops at them or continues underneath. Leave utility disconnections and heavy moves to someone equipped for the job.
Adjacent rooms and daily access
Discuss dust control, ventilation and access to the house. Plan an alternative route for people and pets while the garage is a work area. Follow the installer’s restrictions for the actual products being used.
Leave the surface preparation to the agreed scope
Do not apply a sealer, acid wash, wax or another coating before the appointment unless the installer specifically requests it. Extra products can change the preparation or compatibility requirements. Tell the installer about oil, cleaners and previous treatments instead.
If the floor is peeling, review coating removal and replacement. For damp spots or cracks, use the concrete assessment checklist to prepare questions.
Get a return-to-use plan in writing
Ask for separate instructions for walking, moving storage back, parking and wet cleaning. Those times can differ, and they can change with the product and conditions during installation. “Finished today” does not necessarily mean “park tonight.”
Keep the product details, warranty terms if offered, and cleaning instructions with your estimate. When you move belongings back, follow the installer’s advice for wheels, supports and heavy equipment.
